Thought it would be fun to introduce 'from the land of chaos' Newsletter subscribers to other Rural businesses and especially those run by rural women. I love supporting local rural business where I can, and thought you might like to hear from some of them. Emily and I met in Coonamble as two newbies town in 2010 when Coonamble was cut off by flooding and I was stuck in town & we really got to know each other, and have been mates since.
It is awesome to see Emily grow in strength from her businesses, and I can't wait to see what Emily, Tim and family achieve with the flower garden and business. I really enjoyed the branding session for launching Petal & Bow Flowers, and was amazed by the flower gardens that have been put together by Emily & Tim, the greenhouse, and the giftboxes that they have curated. 1. Give a quick intro into who you are and tell us about you life?
Hi, I’m Emily. Married to Tim, mother to two little girls Evie 2.5 and Elle 7 months old and flower grower. I moved to Coonamble in 2010 where I met Tim and we got married 3 years ago and have set up Coonamble as our home. Where we lead a busy life with our two girls, contracting, farming and growing flowers!
2. Tell me about your rural business?
We are a small seasonal flower farm, growing flowers for individuals and wholesale throughout the region. Everything we grow on farm here. All flowers are picked the night before or the morning of delivery, so you are receiving a fresh product with a longer vase life.
We also have a small selection of carefully curated giftboxes all made up of Australian products. This gives us the opportunity to off seasonal flower bunches locally and send giftboxes Australia wide.
3.What inspired you to start Petal & Bow Flowers?
I was inspired by wanting to have a business that the whole family can be involved in. Spend more time at home with the girls and able to help Tim out when necessary.
4. What challenges did you find at the beginning of your journey and how did you overcome them?

5. What do you love about love about living rural?
There have been so many challenges, knowing what to plant when, how many successions to plant, spacing between plants, to pinch or not to pinch. What’s going to flower when, will we have a flow of flowers and varieties flowering together? The weather has also been very challenging this year. There is a great community out there of other small growers from around the country who are willing to share knowledge, I have also read a lot of books.
6. Name a pro and con about being married to a farmer?
A pro of been married to my farmer is he is very handy and if I need something he is the man to make it, find it or fix it. The biggest con is you never know when the plans will change or when they will be home.
7. What’s the best thing about becoming a mum?
Watching the girls grow up as they learn new things and get their own little personalities.
8. What has surprised you the most about becoming a mum?
How quickly the time goes. Everyone tells you to enjoy it, and they grow up so quickly. They really do and I have no idea where the past 2.5 years have gone!
9. How do you find being a mum and owning a business?
Very busy. Having two small businesses within the family means there is always something happening. I wouldn’t have it any other way as its great to be able to share it with the girls and take them to work.
10. Any tips for others?
Just give it a go. The flexibility of working for myself is worth the challenges that come with it.
11. Describe to me what an amazing day looks like to you?
An amazing day for me is generally an early morning flower pick as the sun comes up. Then working or playing with the girls.
12. Are you are morning or night person?
Morning person
13. Who inspires you in business and personal life?
The person who I feel inspires me is my late Grandma, Margot. She was quite the lady a small business owner and gardener. She had the most amazing garden around her house.
14. What have you found more challenging, droughts or flooding rains?
Droughts are tough, however flooding rains just make everything hard work.
